Wonderful 18th century former guard house, this traditional cottage is located in an area full of smuggling history and boasts far reaching sea and countryside views.

This charming cottage is in the region of 300 years old and was used in the past to capture smugglers off the Dorset coast. In more recent times it was the HMRC Officer’s accommodation. Inside the cottage has been lovingly and tastefully renovated to include neutral tones, painted antique furniture and carefully coordinated soft furnishings, while outside an enclosed suntrap terrace has a chiminea for those long summer evenings. Located in the beautiful small village of Seatown, this property boasts a traditional exterior which sits beautifully in the local area. The village is small and has a beach, pub, shop and some very good walks. The highly acclaimed local pub, The Anchor Inn, is just a stone’s throw away and can provide pre-ordered meals to be delivered to the cottage (further details in the 'need to know'). A popular route takes in Golden Cap and Thorncombe Beacon, both of which have strong links to the prevention of smuggling in the area.

The cottage is stone-built, providing warmth on cold days and a cool ambience on warmer days. Enter the property through the porch into the well-equipped kitchen and small utility room. A panelled sitting/dining room with comfortable furnishings and a log burner is the perfect place to curl up of an evening, where you can see glimpses of the nearby coast from the windows. There is a rear hall leading to a downstairs WC and shower room. The staircase is low, steep and winding and leads to three well-appointed bedrooms; two doubles have beautiful feature window seats allowing views of the sea and they also boast elegant Victorian fireplaces. The smaller twin room has stunning views of Golden Cap and there is an additional bathroom on this floor.

The enclosed front terrace houses many plants and a feature chimenea. The rear enclosed terrace is the perfect sun trap and has paved areas. There is a laundry room outside the property which houses the washing machine, dryer and freezer.

  • 3 bedrooms - 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom
  • Bathrooms - 1 bathroom with handheld shower and WC on the first floor; 1 shower room with WC on the ground floor

Lovely spot and nicely furnished comfortable cottage for a family of 4 with adult children. Limited mobile signal but wi-fi was fine. Loved the views of the sea and the sound of the waves from the bedroom. Its a pebble beach and very steep - recommend surf shoes for getting out of the sea - very invigorating and lovely waves.

Good location. Comfortable furnishings, beds etc. Windows in a poor state, jammed open..ok in summer maybe..not in winter! No hairdryer, out of date information in the folder. Needs a general overhaul.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Stunning location, wonderful local facilities and abundant activities to participate in locally too. The cottage was very comfortable indeed, well-equipped and the communication from the agents/owners was always clear, helpful and warm.

The fact that this is our sixth visit speaks volumes. Its location is superb and it's peaceful and quiet. The cottage is cosy. It needs some tender loving care in places to make it good value for money in comparison to other cottages.

Good location. Always nice and clean. The house furnishings, garden area and equipment needs upgrading as it is not up to the standard I would expect for the rental being asked.

A lovely location with the beach(pebbly) almost at the end of the drive and the pub next door. Also there is a pizza stall on the beach as well as a seafood stall. The cottage is pleasant and a bit quirky. The stairs are steep. The local Spar shop is well stocked but expensive.

The cottage is in an outstanding location and our boys have twice loved the ability to hunt for and find fossils on the beach. Falling to sleep with the waves crashing on the beach was amazing and not to be forgotten. Next door is a lovely pub with a beer garden ideal for a hot summer evening and views of the coast which are hard to beat. Dorset asRead more always was ideal for a family holiday with Monkey World, Tank Museums and quaint small towns. The cottage, needed some basic TLC for the price. Hide

Guard House Cottage is in a wonderful spot, just a few seconds from the beach and the excellent Anchor Inn. Fantastic walks from the cottage too, to Eype and Golden Cap to Charmouth. We were very lucky with the weather, but the cottage would be very cozy on a stormy day. I think we will be back v soon!!
