Broadchurch is a hit ITV series, with its murder mystery storyline, acting performances and dramatic coastal landscapes winning plenty of awards over its three seasons.
Mostly filmed in Dorset, part of the charm of Broadchurch is the brilliant landscape and coastal shots that really make the show stand out.
The fictional village of Broadchurch is a peaceful community until tragedy strikes. Through the lead characters of detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, played by David Tennant and Olivia Colman respectively, the show reveals more about the Broadchurch community as they try to piece together a murder mystery.
Where is Broadchurch Filmed?
The made-up town is situated on the Jurassic Coast in South Dorset and is perhaps a combined name of Broadoak and Whitchurch which are in Dorset near where Broadchurch is said to be based. However, it is in the real-life village of West Bay where the majority of the filming takes place, with its quaint streets appearing on our screens as the centre of Broadchurch.
The charming village of West Bay can be found along the southern coast of Dorset and the area has been a favourite holiday destination for generations with its wonderful food, friendly welcome, and quality beaches. West Bay is the type of place that comes to mind when ‘traditional British seaside holiday' is mentioned. It is a wonderful location for family holidays, coastal and countryside walks, fossil hunting, and a whole host of other activities.
It is from West Bay that the iconic cliffs, which feature in the opening scenes and throughout Broadchurch, can be reached with tourists and beach lovers flocking every year. When visiting it is easy to see why West Bay is a popular holiday destination, with the popularity of Broadchurch attracting even more numbers to the area. By visiting West Bay you too can experience a place and a community that inspired the well renowned.
